WEEK 3 HOMEWORK
I am interested in Murat Suyur’s Art works. His art works appeal to me as they are simplistic, interesting and often humorous. I love the high quality pictures he takes and also his creativity in the Photoshop program. Furthermore often his images tackle serious issues in a more interesting manner rather than being dull and boring.
Art Proposal
The topic I have chosen to explore is “sex and gender”. The issues that I have chosen to explore through my artworks are society’s expectations of gender behavior, gender order, the limitations imposed on genders and the inequalities between different genders.
I am addressing this issue as I want to create awareness to how society pressures certain types of behaviors on genders and how this leads togender inequalities. I believe that the definition of gender is misunderstood by the wider society especially by the media, business, politics and religion. Gender is often determined by physical differences such as sex organs. However, I believe that, gender is something a person chooses to become and that you are not born as a male or female, but rather become one. I also feel that, whenthe wider society puts pressure on certain genders to behave in a certain way, and that creates boundaries which results in gender inequalities.
Gender affects society, and the individuals living in it. Society’s lack of recognition of gender equality and those genders which are neither Man nor Women creates problems for those individuals as it limits the individual’s right to be whoever they wish to be.
Throughout my artworks I will be using 5 digital media including photography, collage, video, digital painting/drawing and animation. The five possible artworks are as following:
- In order to challenge the preconceived ideas about the gender colors, I will create a photograph image of a male doll on a pink background, and a female doll on a blue background.
- I will use collage to depict a seen of a room with a spider on the floor, a scared man standing on a chair and a woman with a sledge hammer intending to kill the spider. This will question the expectations of gender behavior. Usually men kill to protect the female not the other way around.
- I will use video to portray the barriers between genders by showing a male and a female walking side by side on a road that is divided by a thick white line.
- For digital painting/drawing, I want to draw a female with masculine features.
- For animation, I want to show girl doing a masculine activity.
Digital art is the best way to explore my issue/topic, as it would allow me to use certain tools such as computer software, to manipulate the images so that my artistic ideas come to life.
Predominantly, I am going to make my artworks as simple as possible so that the impact is immediate. I will experiment with gradients and colour.
Since most of the students have facebook accounts, I will be presenting my art on Facebook. This way I can reach to a wider audience who could view my artworks and comment on them any time they wish. Furthermore, facebook allows the viewer to identify if they like the image. Based on the number of people who liked a particular image, as well as the comments, I could identify the best images. I need to upload low-resolution images in order to prevent theft of my images. Also, the viewers need to have a computer, a facebook account and internet access.
The art work I am influenced by is the “cigarette tie” created by “Murat Suyur”(as shown below) who influences my style of photography.I am influenced by this artwork as it uses humor in a clever way to describe the harm of cigarettes. I will also attempt to incorporate humor/simplicity in my artworks.
